Abstract
This study aims the evaluation between the absorbed energy values obtained from Charpy impact specimens of different dimensions. AISI 4340 steel (34 and 40 HRC) was used in this study and four dimensions (10 × 10 mm2, 5 × 10 mm2, 2,5 × 10 mm2 and 3 × 4 mm2) were tested at different temperatures. The absorbed energy values obtained from sub-size specimens were corrected using the ASTM A370-21 (ASTM, 2021). In turn, for the correction of the values obtained from the miniaturized specimens, the LTAD-UFU database was used. The results showed that the material with the lowest hardness (34 HRC) presented the highest energy values for being the most ductile. The corrected absorbed energy values for sub-size specimens showed expressive percentage differences in relation to the results obtained from standard specimens. The observed differences reached 87.4 % for the LSE (lower shelf energy) for specimens with a 2.5 mm thickness and 40 HRC. Thus, the correction following ASTM A370 (2021) did not prove to be satisfactory under the experimental conditions investigated. The corrected energy values for miniaturized specimens, using the LTAD/UFU database, showed good agreement with the standard ones. Percentage differences less than 10.4 % were observed.
