Abstract
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (EMC/UFSC) offers undergraduate and graduate programs in mechanical and materials engineering. Since the graduation of the first class in 1966, some 3,000 professionals have entered the market, occupying positions ranging from professors and researchers to executives of large companies in at least 16 countries, with great success. Demand for candidates for the entrance exam, which has historically remained high, has declined significantly in recent years. The accelerated digital transformation in all sectors, exacerbated by the COVID era, has changed pedagogical structures worldwide and the views of stakeholders in general, changing the status quo of the professional education process. In Brazil, several universities and engineering schools have revised their strategic plans and workflows in light of international movements and national curriculum guidelines (DCN). EMC/UFSC is committed to modernizing its curricula in every possible way. Discussions have been held with experts, information surveys have been conducted, and opinions have been sought from students, professors, graduates, and employers. With this knowledge, the educational process is being rethought, and new policies and consistent procedures are being developed. This article presents the result of this ongoing process at EMC/UFSC.
