Abstract
Abstract. Within the current industrial sector, the demand for equipment maintenance has surged, underscoring the need for heightened reliability and predictability. Failures in geared systems can impart significant financial, operational, and safety repercussions, hindering the attainment of organizational goals. Despite the importance of early and precise diagnosis in preventing equipment failures, implementing recently developed techniques—emerging from extensive research in monitoring and prognosis methodologies—poses challenges due to their multidisciplinary and technical complexity. Streamlining this process could add substantial value. Accordingly, this study endeavors to contribute to fault detection in rotating machinery by assessing the effectiveness of classical diagnostic and optimization techniques through a simulated case study. A geared pair with tooth and transmission errors was simulated, incorporating models of gear stiffness and transmission errors. A signal filter was employed to focus on pertinent fault frequencies. Following this, the most appropriate optimization technique was selected to identify the faulty system's parameters and classify the degradation level corresponding to each failure mode.
