Abstract
The present study investigates the stress in an ASTM 516 GR 70 steel pressure vessel and its relationship with the occurrence of semi-elliptical cracks near regions where the maximum principal stress acts with greater intensity. To illustrate this relationship, a case study using a reduced model of the pressure vessel is presented, focusing on the behavior of the semi-elliptical crack in the presence of discontinuities. The results demonstrate that the insertion of semi-elliptical crack close to the discontinuities can significantly modify the mode of crack propagation in those regions.
