Abstract
In the context of aerodynamic applications, flow separation can cause harmful effects, including increased pressure fluctuations, stall, and loss of lift, which can increase fuel consumption. To address this issue, periodic excitations have been studied for separation control, showing promising results for performance, flow reattachment and optimization. The excitation of Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities in the shear layer formed from the point of separation is suggested as the fundamental mechanism for the suppression of separation. This paper presents a study on the impact of external disturbances on laminar separation bubbles and their potential to amplify nonlinear phenomena and to promote transition to turbulence. The simulations were conducted using computational fluid dynamics on NACA0012 at different angles of attack, and the presence of separation bubbles was identified through inspection of the wall shear stress. RANS simulations using the k$\omega$-SST turbulence model were performed, and the velocity and pressure fields around the airfoil were analyzed, along with the aerodynamic forces and surface pressure from steady-state simulations. Results showed that the introduction of disturbance waves affected the aerodynamic coefficients of the airfoil, with full dynamics to be presented at a conference.
