Abstract

The objective of this study is to analyze the potential for electricity generation from biogas generated by the landfill in a city in the Midwest of Minas Gerais. The study aims to determine the appropriate methodology for analyzing biogas and methane generation, as well as determining the potential for energy production to minimize the operating costs of the landfill. To achieve this goal, a technical analysis was carried out to verify the potential for biogas production for electricity generation. It was necessary to estimate the growth curve of municipal solid waste (MSW) collection between the period from 2001 to 2019. It was also necessary to estimate the population growth of the city during the studied period, since the amount of MSW produced is proportional, among other factors, to population growth, and this growth was based on the decreasing growth rate model. Among the existing methodologies, the LandGEM© methodology developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency was chosen to estimate biogas production by the landfill. The method developed by the São Paulo State Environmental Company (CETESP) was adopted to estimate the potential for electricity production. The results obtained indicated that the landfill in the city in the Midwest of Minas Gerais presents favorable conditions to produce enough biogas for electricity generation. However, it is necessary to carry out a more precise characterization of the biogas generated and to control the volume of MSW collected. Although the proposed objectives have been achieved, there are still technical and economic challenges that need to be overcome to implement an effective project for energy recovery from biogas in landfills. Nevertheless, it is important to highlight that this alternative can minimize the operating costs of landfills and contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In summary, the analysis conducted shows that the energy recovery from biogas generated in landfills is a viable and promising option for electricity generation.
