Abstract
The cyclic plasticity and the fatigue behaviour of the 304L stainless steel were investigated at room temperature for fully-reversed strain-controlled axial, torsional, proportional axial-torsional and 90º out-of-phase non-proportional loading. Significant secondary hardening, associated with a martensitic phase transformation, was observed for axial and torsional loading, whilst mild or no secondary hardening occurred for proportional and non-proportional experiments. Measurable plastic strains were observed for all experiments, including those that did not fail after 2000000 cycles. The equivalent strain amplitude did not correlate the fatigue life for the investigated load
