Abstract
In this paper, an enriched formulation of the boundary element method is applied to directly evaluate the stress intensity factors (SIFs) of plane crack problems. A novel shifted enrichment crack tip function is used to preserve the meaning of physical displacements for the nodal parameters. Only two additional degrees of freedom, associated to the SIFs, are introduced per crack tip. To accommodate these new parameters, a crack tying constrain is used. Some numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the accuracy of the direct method. The results are compared with the answers obtained with the J-integral (indirect method) and with those available in the literature.
