Abstract
The effect of small surface defects on the fatigue life of low carbon steel is investigated. The experimental program consists of a set of axial fatigue tests on specimens with 0.45 mm and 0.75 mm sized circular defects. The fatigue life was reduced significantly, according to the size of the defect.
