Abstract
A finite element for plane frames under small strains but large rotations, based on the total Lagrangian description, is developed. The element stems from the Timoshenko beam theory with linear approximations for axial and transverse displacements as well as for the rotation. In addition to identify analytical and numerically the membrane and transverse shear lockings, it is shown how to properly alleviate them.
