Abstract
For several branches of industry, it is common the use of equipment that confines fluid under pressure, either internally or even externally. This type of equipment is called Pressure Vessel. In order to calculate the stress along the Pressure Vessel we can use two distinct formulations: The first one considers the transversal stress component as null and it is applied for Pressure Vessel with thin wall. The second one considers all stress components and it is suitable for Pressure Vessel with thick wall. This article will develop analytically and demonstrate how a single formulation can be applicable for either thin or thick wall Pressure Vessel. The results obtained from the analytical formulation will be validated by the Finite Element Method and compared with other to formulations above mentioned. In the end, this article will show how dangerous it can be if the designer considers a wrong thickness for the wall pressure vessel. The designer must be very careful adopting the correct formulation. In the end, this article will show how careful the designer must be when considers the wall Pressure Vessel as thin. Seeing that the results between these two considerations are very different.
