Abstract
A proposed turbulence model is based on the transport equations for the fluctuating kinetic energy and helicity, together with the statistical dynamic equation for the velocity-vorticity tensor, for its relation to the divergence of the Reynolds stress. This work reports on initial steps towards constructing the computational tools for the calibration of such model. Actual calibration requires DNS or LES methods, which demands parallel processing in computational cluster, whilst the work here presented was performed in a personal computer, simulating turbulent fluctuations by a laminar oscillating flow. The incompressible isothermal Navier-Stokes solver uses the semi-staggered mesh, the UNIFAES scheme for the discretization of advective and viscous terms of momentum equation, explicit predictor-corrector integration of the momentum equation and the Poisson equation for pressure to enforce continuity. Correlations being recorded are the fluctuating parts of kinetic energy and helicity, all terms of the respective transport equations, and the terms of the statistical dynamic equation for the velocity–vorticity tensor. These are computed with both second and forth order central differencing, and trapezoidal integration rule for the statistical dynamic equations. Intensive checking is performed by comparing conceptually equivalent but numerically distinct expressions, such as advective and divergence forms of the advective terms, and others.
