Abstract
The branch of assistive technology research applied to wheelchairs includes as its objectives to analyze and to understand the loads on the user during locomotion with wheelchairs. The large upper extremity loads and the repetitions of the propulsion movement increase the incidence of upper limbs injuries, pain and muscle fatigue. The main goal of this study is investigating through numerical simulations of a dynamic four-bar model the influence of partial assistance by means of an electric motor attached to the wheels of a manual wheelchair. The findings include a decrease in propulsion frequency together with the expected decrease in upper limb joint moments as assistance is increased.
