Abstract
Freeze-cast ceramics, polymers and even metals have recently attracted attention for their sound propagation characteristics, given their inherent controllable porosity associated with many different materials used in this fabrication route. This study used Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO) as a solvent and alumina (corundum)/magnesium oxide (periclase) ceramics to produce samples. The impedance, reflection and sound absorption coefficients measured with an impedance tube are used to calibrate the Johson-Champoux-Allard-Lafarge (JCAL) model parameters through least squares curve fitting. These calibrated parameters are then investigated based on Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images and porosity assessment using archimedes principle. A good sound absorption coefficient was found throughout the studied frequency range, although the correlation between found JCAL parameters and the material characterization results is still under investigation.
