Abstract
Torsional vibrations are usually present in rotating machines, and it is one of the leading causes of mechanical failures. This work investigates the performance of the vibration attenuation bandgap in a reciprocating compressor shaft with concentrated constant inertias attached with identical resonators and rainbow metastructures under harmonic excitation. Although the cylinder inertia has a nonlinear nature related to the shaft rotation, in the present work, to simplify the analysis and provide insightful analytical solutions, the nonlinear interactions are neglected yielding to constant inertia of the cylinder, which includes the crank-slider mechanism. Modal expansion theory is employed to obtain natural frequencies and modes including the effects of concentrated inertia. The results show that identical resonators are able to attenuate a frequency range around the target frequency. On the other hand, rainbow metastructures can produce an attenuation bandgap 700% wider than identical resonators with the same added inertia.
