Abstract
The present work aims to analyze the fracture toughness and resistance to the propagation of fatigue cracks in steel and ASTM A516 Gr 55 used in the petroleum industry, either in structural elements or for the manufacture of pressure vessels and pipe fittings. The standard BS 7448 -1 guides the execution of tests with the purpose of evaluating mechanical properties that are required for a good behavior in these situations. According to the results, it can be concluded that the studied material presents high resistance to crack propagation from a pre-existing defect, and with the correct employability the use for the construction of mechanical structures and devices submitted to fatigue efforts in operation.
