Abstract
A reciprocating compressor is a sort of alternating machinery that is considered to be one of the most essential devices related to power transmission in a broad range of important industry sectors. Not only refineries and gas transmission facilities substantially depend on this kind of machine but it is also widely employed in the chemical and food industries. Mechanical vibrations are associated with several component faults in this kind of equipment. One of the most significant mechanisms in reciprocating machines is the crankshaft, which works as the spinal column of these apparatuses. These components are responsible for not only driving compressor cylinders but also controlling compression stages and their periods. This rotating component may experience mechanical faults induced by vibrations associated with dynamic forces that work periodically and cause high stress levels. The present work's objective is to investigate the torsional vibration of a double-acting reciprocating compressor operating at critical conditions. The mathematical model considers four compression cylinders driven by an electric motor. The equations of motion are nonlinear due to the variable inertia of the cranckshaft with rotation. The results present periodic and nonperiodic torsional vibration, depending on operational conditions and system parameters, showing the importance of an appropriate dynamical analysis to assure the machine performs as projected and to extend its lifetime.
