Abstract
This paper addresses the fatigue life estimation for AISI 1045 steel in the presence of small surface defects. Axial and torsional fatigue curves were obtained by conducting experiments with high cycle torque and force control. The article discusses the macrographic behaviour of the initiation of the crack, emphasizing the influence of the small defect in the life to the fatigue. In order to estimate the life of the defective material, the influence of the defect size on the Basquin relationship was verified. In order to carry out the studies, axial and torsional loading histories were imposed on a set of specimens with artificial surface defects of cylindrical geometry with an average size of 500 and 700um
