Abstract
Aiming to improve the efficiency of the solid carburizing process, this work has as main objective, to analyze the interference of the granulometry of the raw material supplying carbon in the solid cementation. For solid cementation only charcoal was used in a stainless steel metal casing, the SAE 1020 steel was used. The results show that the lower value of granulometry provided a higher value of surface microhardness (975 HV), however smaller thickness of cemented layer. In the steel of higher particle size, a lower value of microhardness (625 HV) was observed, with a cementitious layer of 331.39 μm. The low value of cemented layer in the steel was attributed to the decarburizing process. It is recommended in future work to use less time in the oven.
