Abstract
The use of composites in the aeronautical industry has been widely used because these materials are often lighter than metals and have mechanical properties that meet the needs of the applications. In this sense, the objective of this study was to evaluate the behavior of a composite made of fiberglass fabric, epoxy resin and ABS (Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene) by subjecting it to the destructive bending test to determine the mechanical properties of this material, and thus evaluate the potential application in aerodesign projects. The analyzed composite presents low density and flexural strength superior to the pure balsa wood and the cork composite, but still does not substitute the balsa wood composite in question of mechanical resistance. Even so, fiberglass ABS sandwich structures can be applied in the development of aircraft for competition, especially in areas that require less resistance and need lighter materials.
