Abstract
In the last years, micromilling process has been extensively studied for several materials. However, there are still many materials with applications in important areas like aerospace, nuclear and biomedical, which due to the cost and the low machinability have not been studied yet. One of these materials is the tantalum, which have a very high melting point and high corrosion resistance, and for these properties, it have multiple applications in the areas presented above. In this work, we presented an initial research of tantalum micromilling with TiAlN coated tungsten carbide tool of 500µm in diameter with a constante spindle speed of 40,000 RPM, feed per tooth of 3, 6 and 7µm, and depth of cut of 20 and 40 µm. The results show the possibility of machining microchannels in a hard to cut material, the cutting forces in normal and feed direction and RMS values of acoustic emission.
