Abstract
Over the last years, international regulatory agencies have been presenting new approaches regarding the behavior of connections in metallic structures, in order to faithfully reproduce the effects caused by these on the mechanical strength of structures. Allied to this, strong industrial competition demands for projects yet more optimized, close to its components resistant limits. In this context, the optimal design of metallic structures becomes a complex task, requiring numerical formulations that can portray the real behavior of these systems, capable to consider the rigidities present in the connections and their influence on the design variables. Thus, present work aims at the implementation of a structural optimization algorithm, which takes the influence of semi-rigid joints in the analysis of plane frames. For this, a meta-heuristic optimization algorithm linked to a finite element numerical model able to evaluate different levels for connection semi-rigidity is used, thereby reflecting in a more realistic modelling. Based on analyzed examples, the results obtained in this work demonstrate the strong influence that the semi-rigid approach causes to the observed structures mechanical behavior, replicating that to the optimization problem, resulting in remarkably different optimal solutions.
