Abstract
Classical engineering metals along with their alloys play an extremely important role as structural materials for many centuries. Over time the products were improved their efficiency, which made it necessary to develop these classic materials to have a higher performance in their applications. This led to the emergence of intelligent materials and among these intelligent materials are the shape memory alloys (SMA´s), which present two phenomena, the shape memory effect (SME) and the superelasticity (SE). These SME and SE properties combined with the biocompatibility of Ni-Ti SMA led to their use in biomechanics and for the development of impact damping devices. In this context, the present work had as objective to make the manufacture, dimensional analysis and the thermal and mechanical characterization of a tube of Ni-Ti SMA. Tubular specimens with external diameter of 15 mm, thickness of 1 mm and length of 4 mm were obtained using a investment casting process. The obtained results revealed that the cast tubes have good deformability with mechanical hysteresis, indicating that they can be used as shock absorbers due to their superelastic behavior verified in the compression tests.
