Abstract
Nowadays, the industry is searching for alternatives that can reduce the costs of production processes while preserving the final quality of the product. Therefore, it is important to know all the characteristics of machining of the material to be used, guaranteeing the efficiency of the operation. The cutting angles of the tool directly influence the machining process. It is possible to highlight the rake angle of the tool, which is one of the variables that directly impact the process, mainly influencing the type and shape of the generated chip and, consequently, the surface quality of the completed part. The use of machines that have computerized numerical control has increased in the machining industry, the use of this type of machinery ensures greater control and precision to the process. The purpose of this work was to study the influence of the rake angle of high speed steel tools on the chip forming mechanism, the accumulation of material on the cutting edge and the surface quality of the part in the turning of the aluminum alloy 6351 T6. Three rake angles were used on the high speed steel tools (0 °, + 10 ° and + 20 °), and a carbide insert having an rake angle of +20°. It could be verified from the tests carried out that the lowest roughness values were obtained with the rake angle of 0°. Regarding the chip forming, both the tool with rake angle of 0° and the carbide insert generated a helical chip while the other tools generated a tape shape chip.
