Abstract
In the present work, the iron aluminides layer obtained after annealing heat treatment in Al alloy deposit on carbon steel substrate obtained by the friction coating process was investigated. The friction coating process can be considered a solid state welding process used to cover or repair surfaces of similar or dissimilar materials. The deposition procedures were performed in a computerized numerical control (CNC) machining center, which has the potential to reduce costs and simplify the process when compared to friction coatings made in specialized machines that still have limited insertion in the industry compared to conventional CNC equipment, aluminizing coatings, laser coating and thermal spray coating. Substrate ABNT 1020 carbon steel plates with 200 x 100 x 8 mm and consumable aluminum rods 100 mm long and 15.4 mm in diameter were used as substrate. After deposition the samples were subjected to heat treatment of isothermal annealing at 650 ° C for 72 and 120 h. After the treatment, the cross section of the samples was evaluated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and microhardness. The coatings obtained presented a thickness of approximately 1.5 mm with chemical composition and homogeneous hardness. The hardness values obtained were elevated, between 900 and 1000 HV, corresponding to the Fe2Al5 phase.
