Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of mechanical vibration on the weld metal microstructure of ASTM A516 Gr.60 steel welded joint, applied to boilers and pressure vessels. For the mechanical vibration treatment, the VWC (Vibratory Welding Conditioning) process was used. For this, a vibratory workbench was designed and developed to perform the experiments. The welds were executed without vibration and with vibration frequencies of 205, 210, 215 and 220 Hz, using the GMAW welding process It was noticed that the vibration resulted in the refining of grains of the weld metal in all the welding conditions, reaching about 113% of refining for an amplitude of 51.2 m/s2 and a frequency of 220 Hz. The mechanical vibration, in all the conditions of welding carried out, promoted a better distribution of the grains in the fusion well, making the microstructure more homogeneous, caused by the refining in the weld metal.
