Abstract
The detection and location of leaks in underground water distribution pipelines has been one of the major problems faced by water companies around the world. In order to reduce the high rate of water loss, techniques have been developed to estimate the presence and location of leaks. Research has shown that the vibro-acoustic cross-correlation method has been outstanding among others techniques because it presents good results in the estimation of the location of leaks in buried pipes. This technique uses the estimate of the time delay (cross-correlation) between the signals acquired at two different measurement positions (usually hydrants) and the speed at which the leakage noise propagates. However, there are factors that affect the estimation of such parameters, such as the geometric and constructive properties of the material and the dynamics of the piping system. In recent years, the determination of accurate values of the time delay estimation has been focused by many researchers in the field of leak detection. Although the value of propagation velocity is obtained by standard tables estimated according to the type of material and pipe geometry, however, such estimates do not always correspond to the actual velocity in the pipe section. One way of estimating this velocity is through a methodology based on the use of an external source of excitation (actuators) to generate vibratory signals in the buried pipe by using impacts as an external source at one of the access point. In this article, it will be introduced an new study of the use of geophones, which are made to be used as sensors as actuators with the objective of estimating the leak noise velocity along a section of the pipe in an actual situation.
