Abstract
The study of the characterization of materials makes it possible to know the behavior of the material through the application of efforts present in different everyday situations. In this way, the application of methods that allow predicting the behavior of materials is carried out through characteristic tests, such as mechanical, physical and chemical tests. In this sense, this study aimed to characterize the behavior of ABNT 4140 steel under nitrided and untreated conditions when subjected mechanical stresses, such as uniaxial traction, torsion and fracture analysis and metallography was also analyzed. The results showed that the characteristics of the nitrided 4140 steel when subjected to tension showed a reduction in the yield level when compared to the untreated condition, in addition to verifying that the longitudinal modulus of elasticity for the untreated ABNT 4140 material was 196, 1 GPa, while for nitrided it was 238.4 GPa, meaning that the material with the nitriding treatment became more rigid. Another factor was the Poisson ratio, which for the 4140 Laminate was found to have an experimental value of 0.2956 and in the nitrided condition it presented a value similar to the laminate of 0.3092. It can be affirmed in this way that the values of the elasticity modules increased in the same proportion. With the torsion analysis, it was shown that the transverse modulus of elasticity showed a similar behavior to the longitudinal modulus of elasticity, where the values of the nitrided sample had an increase of 20% in relation to the untreated sample. The fracture of this steel was evaluated in the tests described where fragile and ductile characteristics were presented in both samples. These results allowed us to evaluate possible applications for 4140 steel with and without treatment.
