Abstract
The strain rate generated in the material when passes through the primary shear plane is influenced by the workpiece material and cutting conditions. Besides this parameter, the chip velocity on the rake face is capable of indicating the tool life, since both are influenced mostly by cutting speed. Among the most used materials in the oil and gas industry, are duplex and superduplex stainless steels, which have high mechanical and corrosion resistance. Other stainless steels, such as the AISI 316 and AISI 410, also present high mechanical and corrosion resistance properties, but separately. In this context, the principal objective is to analyze the shear rate and the chip velocity during the turning process of these three stainless steels, considering two levels of chip velocity and feed rate. The primary shear angle will be calculated from the experimental machining force data and the Merchant orthogonal cutting model. The chip thickness compression ratio will be calculated by the same model and from the chip thickness measurement using SEM. The results showed a strain rate increase with the chip velocity increase, the strain rate reduction with the feed rate increase and, finally, that the cutting speed increase raised the chip velocity. For these results, it was observed that the values found for the superduplex stainless steel were between the values of the other two materials
