Abstract

Industrial valves are mechanical equipment used in fluid management in an industrial plant. They are used in several segments, highlighted in the oil & gas sector, where these devices play a fundamental role in the production and safety of processes. The valve components are manufactured in particular steel designated by product manufacturing standards in alloys like carbon steel and martensitic, austenitic, duplex, and super duplex stainless steels. The most used manufacturing methods for obtaining the pre-form of the parts are forging and casting, the latter being divided into processes such as sand casting and investment casting. After the piece generation by these strategies, they go through the machining process to obtain the geometry and final surface finish, according to the application. In this context, there are discussions on the part of users and valve manufacturers regarding the preference for forged materials instead of castings to eliminate the probability of internal defects in the parts, such as, for example, porosity arising from casting methods. On the other hand, one current defends the use of cast materials, as it is usually possible to get very close to the final geometry of the part, reducing the machining process used and being able to obtain lighter components. It is also argued that castings can be approved using appropriate nondestructive testing techniques, ensuring safety in applications. Therefore, this article offers a brief literature review on the manufacture of industrial-valve parts by forging and casting processes, showing the advantages and disadvantages of each one of them based on the analysis of a case study. Thus, the work aims to present itself as an assisted reference in decision-making regarding the choice and elaboration of the valve specification by users in industry, the academic sector, and manufacturers of this equipment.
