Abstract
The production of artificial stone with slate waste, generated in its extraction and cutting, is a production process of a composite resin / load insertion. The waste in the form of a sludge composed mainly of water, lubricants and crushed rock used here, has a particle size below 2 mm, accumulates in yards, reservoirs and streams, affecting the environment in areas of extraction, particularly in Minas Gerais. The Minas Gerais State (Brazil) responds to about 95% by Brazilian slate production and generates an average of 1,8x105 tons of waste per year. The production of alternative materials having the waste generated in the manufacturing industries of rocks as constituents can reduce or even eliminate pollution in the extraction areas, apart from promoting the emergence of new opportunities for jobs and income essential to the progress and development of the country. The production of artificial stone with similar properties to natural rock involves the use of a mixture containing up to 75% of the slate powder and resin (polyester / epoxy / ecological). The components are mixed, deposited in mold cavity, subjected to vibration and pressed with the application of loads up to 40 KN. After 24 hours the composite can be removed for physical and mechanical characterization and use as floors, tiles or decoration. Initial tests have shown strength values between 5 and 11 MPa and water absorption less than 1%.
