Abstract
The additive manufacturing process of ceramic materials has been widely researched in recent years due to the unique characteristics obtained in the parts manufactured by this process, such as fabrication of complex geometries, the flexibility of low scale production and material savings. However, many challenges still limit the commercial use of this process, as it is still difficult to manufacture dense parts, low porosity, dimensional accuracy, and free cracks, which are fundamental to the mechanical performance of the material used. The correlation process parameters and the part properties are fundamental to make the process result predictable. Thus, a preliminary study of the direct additive manufacturing process of mullite by Laser Engineered Net Shaping (LENS) is proposed. A specimen of mullite aggregate prepared was exposed to laser beam where the density of the bead was obtained using immersion test and, furthermore, the behavior and geometric pattern of the manufactured parts are presented. The result obtained is considered satisfactory, and it was possible to obtain a relative density of 91% in the core of the melted material, referring to the applied power of 350 W in the sample of mullite aggregate prepared with a concentration of 8% phosphoric acid.
