Abstract
In Bronze Aluminum and Nickel (NAB) alloys, the quenching treatment results in a refined metastable structure known as Cu martensite, supersaturated in Ni and Fe. The subsequent aging treatment allows hard intermetallic phases of the κ group (kappa), precipitate thinly and dispersed in the matrix. This combination of treatments increases hardness, resistance to wear. In this work, the Plasma Immersion Ion Implantation (PIII) nitriding process worked simultaneously as a heat source for aging and as a nitrogen source for the treatment of the NAB alloy. The samples were analyzed by nanoindentation. The hardness related only to aging increased as the treatment time was reduced. The addition of nitrogen on the surface of this material allowed to increase the hardness of NAB to values above the condition only aged. The optimized treatment condition was 8 kV for 90 minutes, which showed a higher Hardness value on the substrate and a significant hardening on the surface after nitriding.
