Abstract
Most of machining processes use as cutting tools coated cemented carbide inserts. One typical solution in this field is TiCN + Al2O3 + TiN triple-layer coating, which is extensively used on steel turning. This work contains the results of characterization of two commercially available triple-coated cemented carbides, considering that one grade is defined as the evolution of the other one, which was formerly developed. This referred characterization was held on a 3D image analyzer microscope, on which different roughness parameters (as Rz, Rsk and Rku) can be identified on the clearance and rake surfaces, besides cutting edge irregularities (Δr and WΔr). It was possible to conclude that roughness measured on the rake surface of the tool is typically lower than that measured on the clearance surface, and also rake surface is characterized by broader peaks and narrower valleys than the clearance surface, which is more symmetric. Apparently, the tool grade that was more recently developed presents a finer rake surface and also lower cutting edge irregularities, which may possibly provide higher resistance to crater wear and chipping occurrence.
