Abstract
The right understanding of features that can influence the materials machining is a critical issue to seek to increase the efficiency of process, improve the quality of parts and reduce environmental impacts. In the conventional machining process, the friction conditions at the chip-tool interface interfere in the cutting forces, since they depend on workpiece material strength, but also on the area of primary and secondary shear zones during chip formation. Thus, the aim of this work was to evaluate the behaviour of tool-workpiece pair, during cylindrical external turning operation, in which it was used textured cutting tools by femtosecond laser (straight and zig-zag texture) and non-textured (reference). The workpieces are martensitic stainless steel bars. The comparison among cutting tools was carried out from the assessment of machining force performance, cutting power, form tolerance (cylindricity) and surface roughness (Ra and Rz), for such a constant cutting condition. The results suggest advantage for the cutting tool with straight texture pattern.
