Abstract
Structures with geometric periodicity can present interesting dynamic properties like stop and pass frequency bands. In this case, corrugated beams also present the dynamic properties of periodic structures due to their periodic geometry, and they have the advantage of having a constant cross-section area and material homogeneity (no need to change the mass or the material properties along the beam). Literature shows that, as we change the proportions of the bump (curved cell of the corrugated beam), the natural frequencies change and tend to form large band gaps in the frequency spectrum of the beam. The idea of the present work is to attach macro fiber composites (MFC) patches on the surface of a straight beam and impose the corrugated geometry to the beam in an active way. Hence, it will be possible to actively create the band gaps in the structure by changing its straight geometry to a corrugated one. In this work, we present the mathematical model of the beam and of the MFC patch, and we show numerically the affect of the patches on the frequency response functions of the beam: the beam starts presenting band gaps as we increase the action of the patches, by changing the geometry of the beam from a straight to a corrugated one.
