Abstract
In the industry, hydraulic actuation systems have been a popular solution majority employed when is required a large amount of power allied to a compact size. Over the years, this feature has turned the hydraulic actuation systems the mostly used in the mobile industry as in heavy machinery and aeronautics. Generally, hydraulic systems use a fixed rotational speed source to move the hydraulic pump, one of the strategies to vary the flow rate is using a variable volumetric displacement pump. This kind of pump can adjust the volumetric displacement according to system demand, able to reduce the flow rate when the system is in low demand condition or to decrease the energy dissipation. However, hydraulic systems are known for their low energy efficiency, depending on the application area and work conditions. This includes the variable volumetric displacement pump which presents a low volumetric efficiency, under low flow rate demand, reducing the overall pump efficiency. The digital hydraulic concept emerges as a way to design hydraulic systems in order to avoid or reduce some issues such as throttling control and energy dissipation. In parallel connection design, two or more discrete components have their outlets intelligently controlled to supply the system demand. This feature can be extended to digital hydraulic pumps where parallel connected pumps have their outlets individually controlled by on/off valves switching the flow rate to the reservoir or the system. In this paper, a study case was developed using a digital hydraulic pump composed of three pumps with different volumetric displacements and a variable displacement pump. In order to compare both pumps working on different operational conditions, catalog data was used to estimate the volumetric and overall efficiency maps. This study aims to estimate the energy efficiency of the digital hydraulic pump and its correspondent variable volumetric displacement pump. These results can be useful to improve the pump selection procedures that best suit the flow rate supply range, as well as to improve pump control strategies based on efficiency.
