Abstract
Due to a growing need for the nuclear industry to evaluate effects of degradation of the mechanical properties of equipment still in operation, miniature tests such as the Small Punch Test (SPT) were developed. In order to carry out these tests, test specimens of much smaller size than those of conventional tensile tests (diameter 8 mm and 0.5 mm thick) are classified as a non-destructive test since the amount of material to be removed is very small and does not compromise, in most cases, the integrity of the machinery analyzed. Small Punch is a test that quantifies well the mechanical properties of the materials; however, it is necessary to understand how the test parameters influence the results, in order to determine mechanical properties such as tensile strength, yield stress and percent elongation. The present work aims to determine the mechanical properties through Small Punch tests and to compare the results found with those of conventional tensile tests for different metallic materials. Two metallic alloys were used to carry out this study: stainless steel AISI 304 (Cr-Ni) with austenitic microstructure, non-temperable and non-magnetic; and ASTM A335 P92 ferritic-martensitic alloy steel (9% chromium, 1.75% tungsten, 0.5% molybdenum), being mainly used in high temperature pipes. Different velocities of tests were studied in order to verify the influence of this parameter on the properties obtained with the Small Puch Test. The results obtained by means of the miniature test are qualitatively feasible for the description of the mechanical properties of the materials used in the present work and test speed has a direct influence on the obtained values, with similar pattern to the conventional tensile tests. However, small volume of material has become a limiter for materials that may undergo some kind of plastic transformation induced phase transformation.
