Abstract
Wind farm layout optimization consists in setting the best position of the wind turbines in the way to increase the wind farm yield. Usually, power production and investment cost are the main objectives of this complex, multimodal and high-dimensional problem. However, wind turbines causes some environmental impacts that should be taken into account. One of these environmental issues is noise, which is linked to annoyance and sleep disturbance in residential areas. Previous researches have proposed some approaches on optimizing a wind farm layout in terms of maximum power generation. Although, few of them focused on establishing limits to noise level. This study aims to address the layout optimization considering noise propagation and energy production. Different scenarios are analyzed with respect to distance among turbines, wake effect and sound pressure level constraints. The genetic algorithm is adopted for better performance due to its good results in finding a solution in large search spaces. In the first moment, compared to an initial random layout, we performed the optimization without noise constraint. Then, the same layout was optimized considering conditions to reduce the noise level. This formulation allows quantifying the tradeoffs in terms of power production and generated noise, verifying situations where these targets are conflicting or not.
