Abstract
To make machines and their components that make our lives comfortable to work we need to supply energy, and more recently, great concern has risen about how to supply that energy demand in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way. According to the law of conservation of energy, energy can only be converted from one form to another such as changing the kinetic energy from water into electricity in hydroelectric power plants. Fishing boats typically use fossil fuels for propulsion and electrical energy is used in the sensors, lights, and refrigeration. The refrigeration process in fishing boats is essential because it directly interferes with the quality of the products, as it avoids the deterioration process, in addition, it is mandatory to follow Brazilian and international standards for food of animal origin. According to the Brazilian standard from 2007, fish is considered refrigerated when kept close to the freezing temperature of the water and is considered frozen when kept at temperatures of -18ºC or less in the center. Vapor compression refrigeration systems rely on electrical energy and refrigerant to obtain the refrigeration effect. Such systems are typically noisy, and a possible leaked gas, specially from older units, could damage the ozone layer. To better use the energy sources, we will explore the use of an absorption refrigeration system for refrigerated storage of fishing boats. The absorption method uses a couple of heat exchangers and a source of heat to refrigerate the storage room of the boat. The working fluid is a mixture of water and ammonia. The source of heat used to run the absorption refrigeration system will be the exhaust gases coming from the engine of the boat. The methodology consists in conducting an energy analysis of each component, to develop a mathematical model to determine how much heat load can be achieved with the absorption refrigeration.
