Fatigue assessment in Frequency domain of Gaussian stress-time histories with varying irregularity factor

Abstract
This paper is dedicated to the study of fatigue of materials through frequency domain-based methods to estimate life of Gaussian stress-time history. Dealing with random processes in time domain, the Rainflow method is considered the most suitable for cycle counting, however this method requires a history of stress with a high final time to obtain better results. For this reason, a comparison between frequency domain-based methods seen in specialized literature was made, since the computational cost for these methods is lower than by Rainflow method. Four frequency domain-based methods and a time domain-based method were used in comparison. Proximity results for all four stress histories were observed. It was possible to notice that the selected methods in frequency domain provided conservative results in general, obtaining varied errors related to number of cycles when comparing with Rainflow Method as the irregularity factor is changed.
