Abstract
With the intention of verifying the effects of the superficial treatment of the base part in a screwed joint considering the torque vs clamp force behavior, this paper highlights the difference between three superficial treatments applied to SAE1020 steel in addition to the untreated parts. Applying a predetermined torque range to an assembly of parts and measuring the amount of force with a load cell, it was possible to relate these two variables and determine the torque coefficient in each superficial treatment. The collected data made it possible to create a graph of torque vs clamping force and visualize the differences between each of the superficial treatments. Two of the treatments, hard chrome and nickel displayed the need of a higher amount of torque to reach the same clamping force as the electrolytic zinc treatment and the untreated parts. In addition to the already mentioned values, hardness and roughness of the base part were measured before the torque test, in order to have more variables so one can better understand the base part’s superficial treatment behavior in torque coefficient.
