Abstract
The study of the fracture behavior of materials is essential in mechanics, since the presence of discontinuities can lead to failure in loading levels below the tensile strength. The crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD), the crack-tip opening angle (CTOA) and the crack length are important parameters that can be used to describe the crack propagation. In literature, there is a lack of studies on the fracture nonlinear behavior of new polymeric materials, especially when compared to metallic materials. Silicones have been used in several biomechanical applications as the base material for the development of new prostheses and in the manufacture of hospital supplies, due to their biocompatibility and similarity to biological tissues. Such elastomer has a hyperelastic behavior and low tear resistance. Therefore, the failure of this material can be extremely harmful justifying the importance of studying. Also, as the behavior of silicones is similar to biological soft tissues, this study can contribute to the understanding of the behavior of these tissues. The characterization of the mechanical properties of this material was carried out using tensile specimens. The fracture tests were performed on pure shear specimens under quasi-static loading condition at constant temperature. Pure shear specimens with the initial crack length varying from 10 to 50 mm were tested. The two-dimensional digital image correlation method was used to obtain the full-field displacements of the region near the crack tip. CTOD was determined from displacements in the vertical direction and crack length from displacements in the horizontal direction. From CTOA, CTOD and crack length values and the applied load, it is expected to understand how the initial crack length influences the fracture resistance of silicone.
