Abstract
The tuned water injection (TWIN) method has greatly improved over the years. This method mainly consists of adding or extracting specific ions from the injection water. The complex nature and heterogeneity of the carbonates are not the only challenges to the method application since the wettability is predominantly oil-wet and mixed-wet. The wettability alteration is one mechanism that could increase the oil recovery, where the rock previously highly oil-wet alters to a more water-wet condition due to the TWIN and the presence of the potential determining ions (PDI). The present work was conducted utilizing a wettability evaluation method, the qualitative technique of forced displacement. The tests were performed using carbonate reservoir samples at pre-salt conditions of pressure (8200 psi) and temperature (69 ºC). The core sample was submitted to four preparation stages: core cleaning, vacuum, saturation, and wettability restoration. Three experiments were conducted to analyze the wettability behavior in terms of secondary, tertiary, and ultimate recovery. Test 3 presented the higher recovery obtained in secondary mode, achieving 52.7% of original oil in place (OOIP) when using SW, observing an alteration in wettability at the start of the injection process around 1 pore volume (PV), which may have contributed to the higher recovery. When using SW(x10) (SW ten times diluted) as a tertiary method, the higher increment in production was noted with 5.6% (OOIP) associated with the wettability alteration of the system. Important factors, such as the rock facies, petrophysical parameters, and the brine’s chemical composition could influence the results regarding the oil recovery, which presents divergent values of recovery.
