FLOW VISUALIZATION IN AIRFOIL WITH LEADING EDGE PROTUBERANCES APPLIED TO AERODYNAMICS

Abstract
Hydrodynamic tunnels have been used in several engineering fields since the end of the 19th century, one of the main applications is the understanding of phenomena linked to vehicular hydrodynamics and aerodynamics. Using a Vertical Hydrodynamic Tunnel available at UNESP Flow Visualization Laboratory of Ilha Solteira, and continuing with the research previously carried out in this apparatus, an experimental work with aerodynamic bias was carried out, through flow visualization techniques, experimental assay were developed with the purpose of to understand and to investigate the hydrodynamics of humpback whales, which may result in performance improvement for airfoil in the aeronautical sector. For this study, the modeling of different types of profiles was done, some with protuberances, using 3D prototyping. When these profiles were tested, the detachment layer was observed and its variation according to the angle of attack, type of protuberances in leading edge profile and Reynolds number parameter. With such experiment it was verified variation of the separation flow point according to the protuberance analyzed,inferring about drag and lift force in the studied profiles.
