Abstract
Rails are components that have a variety of functions, such as guiding the rail vehicle and transmitting the efforts of loading the rail vehicle to the track infrastructure. Since they are subject to stresses, they can start defects and cause catastrophic failures. The objective of this study is to characterize a rail surface defect in a rail sample provided by VALE S.A. and to define its initiation and propagation, in addition to other characteristics involved. Mechanical tests were performed and the microstructure and surface of the defect were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
