Abstract
This work presents a study on the influence of atmospheric air conditions on the behavior of a gas turbine operating outside the reference conditions. A computer model to predict the performance of an Alstom turbine model GT11N2, which generates 115.4 MW on ISO conditions, operating under off-design conditions was developed and validated. This turbine operates in the Piratininga Thermoelectric Plant, located in the metropolitan region of the city of São Paulo. Using seasonal averaged data of temperature and relative humidity, the performance of this turbine operating without a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) was analyzed by thermodynamic analysis for each season of the year, evaluating the values of generated electricity, heat rate, and efficiency. Two air cooling technologies were modelled to evaluate the turbine performance improvement: mechanical compression chillers and absorption chillers. Preliminary results show that, as the average temperatures for each season are not very high, the gain obtained using such technologies did not justify the adoption of any of the analyzed options.
