Abstract
Airplanes with very high aspect-ratio wings are usually desirable due to its aerodynamic efficiency, but can lead to very large structural deflections during flight. Simulating these non-linear structural models can be computationally expensive. This work aims to study, compare and analyze the efficiency of different numerical integration methods that are used to simulate highly flexible structures. Firstly, a beam model is presented, consisting of a geometrically non-linear beam using the strain-based formulation. Then, static equilibrium was obtained in order to determine the load applied to the structure that would result in the expected non-linear response. The next steps focus on numerical ODE solvers that can be used on the simulation of the flexible structure. The trapezoidal and the alpha-generalized methods were implemented and compared with native MATLAB solvers. The comparison was made by using the computational cost of time-domain simulations considering the different solvers.
