Abstract
The scarcity of water and distance between large urban centers and water resources areas are factors from which water companies are under great pressure to reduce actual water losses in pipe networks. Analog and/or digital devices are used to aid in the detection and location of leaks to reduce water wastage in buried water pipes. The so-called listening stick together with the analog globe geophone analog devices are generally used for leak detection search due to its cost, simplicity and robustness. This paper aims to show that an ordinary computer and accelerometer together with classical signal processing techniques can be used to detect leaks. Moreover, it can be a step forward to instrument those analog devices in an attempt to enhance leak location via using electronics successfully applied in IoT (Internet of Things), such as Arduino. The signal processing is carried using the open source language Python, which is compatible with the IoT boards mentioned previously. The application and prove of such enhancements is achieved by conducting teste in a bespoke rig built to simulate leak conditions. The results given by the data acquired using an ordinary computer is validated by using a commercial data acquisition. It has been shown that this approach is an alternative of no expensive signal processing to leak detection problems.
