Abstract
The high heterogeneity of carbonates makes the determination of permeability a challenge. The presence of vugs has a substantial effect on the flow characteristics. A two-dimensional numerical investigation of the flow in porous media with macropores, such as carbonates, was conducted using the Brinkman equation to describe single-phase incompressible flow between porous material and voids. In this vuggy media model, the free flow in the vugs is represented by the Stokes equation, while in the porous medium, the Darcy equation is applied. Virtual models based on microtomography images of coquinas core samples were obtained from the discretization of space in order to find a representative equivalent homogeneous system. The goal of this analysis was to evaluate an equivalent permeability as a function of macropores area and structures based on the numerical solution to the flow through this representative geometry. Numerical results on 2D sections are discussed and its porosity-permeability model compared to analytical investigations to determine a relation between the equivalent permeability to the vug porosity and structure.
